Welcome to the Whirlybird Aviation Website! |
On this page you will find scratch building plans for great looking and flying model autogyros. From rotor diameters of 50 to 78 inches, they are all of built up construction, being mainly built from balsa, light ply, birch ply and piano wire. The only non standard part is the rotor blade mounting plate which is constructed from 1/16 inch G-10 fiber glass plate and is easily obtainable through your local hobby store or industrial supply company. Because of the forces involved with the rotors on direct control heads, we strongly recommend using high torque metal geared servos. We also suggest the same servo for on the rudder.
The .25 size Profile Kellett Autogyro is an easy model to make and is a profile as the title suggests. Easy to fly and is very tough!
The .25 size DAGs come in 2 versions. The original DAG R1 with it's simple but very elegant lines, is easy to build with stick construction. The DAG R2 version, which still has the pleasing lines of the original but with a rounded fuselage for a more ‘scale like’ look using formers and stringers.
The 60 size DAG 60 is a beautiful large autogyro that floats and is graceful flying. It is the larger version of the R2 with some changes within the design.
The RPG is a pusher Gyrocopter that is loaded with fun and action with direct control head. Take off in a short distance and pull tight high G turns and drop in almost vertical....a lot of fun in a small package
The Pitcairn PCA-2 is a scaled down model of the famous autogyro with no controls needed on head, aileron, rudder and elevator are your controls. It is so easy to fly, you will think you are flying a trainer! A true beauty on the ground or in the air!
Basically the Choice is yours......
We strongly suggest using Astro Flight's # 710 Gearbox for the rotor axle. Made of aluminum, no flexing and are precision machined, it works very well.

The Profile Kellett is a fun and very easy scratch build plan. This autogyro project is geared towards the beginner pilot, experience pilots will appreciate the simplicity and easy handling. Plank fuselage design will give the strength the new pilot needs. The experienced pilot will appreciate the strength for wild crazy maneuvers.
Engine: 32-40 cu 2 stroke or 40-52 four stroke and or electric equivalent.
Rotor Span: 50 inches
Servos: Mini Servo metal geared for the Rudder
2 High torque metal geared servos for the head.
The DAG-R1 was the first designed as a the next step to building and flying autogyros after mastering the Profile Kellett. The fuselage is all stick construction and is very light yet very strong airframe. The plan is full of details, illustrations and directions to make for a pleasurable build.
Engine: 32-40 cu 2 stroke or 40-52 four stroke and or electric equivalent.
Rotor Span: 50 inches
Servos: Mini Servo metal geared for the Rudder
2 High torque metal geared servos for the head.
The DAG R2 is the advanced brother of the DAG R1. Built up fuselage, stringers and formers really show off the curve of a true 1930's autogyro. Like the R1, this project is for the experienced scratch builder. Not a difficult build, the R2 does not disappoint to satisfy the builder pride after completion. She looks elegant.....but you can yank and crank her in the air. So much fun!
Engine: 32-40 cu 2 stroke or 40-52 four stroke and or electric equivalent.
Rotor Span: 50 inches
Servos: Mini Servo metal geared for the Rudder
2 High torque metal geared servos for the head.
The DAG 60 is the BIG brother of the R2. The plan sheets are huge and are loaded with information on how to build the 60. You are going to love the size of this bird! An aircraft is such a pleasure to work on....when your hands fit in the fuselage! Those beautiful lines from the R2 explode on the DAG-60. You will smile every time you gaze upon her. The term "Bigger flies better" applies to the DAG-60 as it floats about the sky.
Rotor Span: 78 inches
Head: 2 High torque metal geared servos
1-Standard High torque metal geared servo for the Rudder
Elevator: 1-Standard size servo
The RPG is a pusher prop gyrocopter. The build is straight forward, the plan is loaded with CAD drawings, illustrations and directions that will assure you a good build. The flight envelope is from docile to aggressive depending on how you like to fly. Tight, high G turns, fast climbs and loops are easy for this bird. A lot of fun to build and fly.
Rotor Span: 50 inches
Motor: AXI 2826-12 or Eflight Power 32
Head: 2 High torque metal geared servos
Rudder: Mini Servo metal geared for the Rudder
How about a scale autogyro, one you have seen photos of on the internet....one who is so popular on Youtube. Yes......now you can own a scale PCA-2. Our plans have been painstakingly researched, planned and designed on CAD. These are true "builder" plans with details and looks second to none. If you like to scratch build, you have found your model plan. All materials can be purchased at a local hobby shop. Regular scratch building tools are needed.
Flight characteristics are docile.....she flies like a trainers. See the video below.
